I’ll be up front and just say that mine is somewhat predictably an Aussie. I think Steve Waugh was an incredible Captain and player. His innings at the SCG when his career was in jeopardy was amazing but more importantly he won games on the strength of his decisions as Captain that the team perhaps weren’t going to win on their skill alone.
Some other Captains that I enjoyed watching have been Ian Botham and Stephen Flemming.
What are your thoughts?

I rate Mark Taylor more highly as Aussie captain than Waugh. He laid all the foundations for the modern Australian team, developing the kind of aggressive cricket that left the rest of us in your dust. He played in the right spirit – tough and uncompromising but always within the spirit of the game, and always with a smile.
For the same reasons (apart from the cheerful demeanour) I have huge respect for Nasser Hussain.
I’d certainly put Stephen Fleming up there with the best.
Pick of the current crop must be Graeme Smith, though Gayle and Vettori aren’t far behind for their achievements with limited resources.
